Welker said the Broncos aren't exactly concerned with buttoning up the message coming from their players to the press

Wes Welker's departure from New England was easily one of the biggest storylines this offseason, even if he might no longer be the best wide receiver on his team (and some people might even consider him, ahem, overrated).

In Denver, Welker's slotted along with Demaryius Thomas and Eric Decker. And he's also much more comfortable apparently -- the newest Broncos wide receiver said he feels like he "can be myself a little more" in Denver than he could in New England.

"I feel like I can be myself a little more for sure," Welker told Mike Silver .

Asked about being told what to say by the team before his interview with Silver, Welker said the Broncos aren't exactly concerned with buttoning up the message coming from their players to the press.

"Here? No. … All they told me was, 'Just be yourself,'" Welker said after a chuckle.

That's not exactly the case in New England. The Patriots and Bill Belichick are renowned for their ability to say lots of words without actually saying anything to the media.

The most famous incident of this with Welker and the Patriots was the wideout being benched by Belichick for dropping 11 different references to feet during a press conference; a clear shot at Rex Ryan that ended up getting the wide receiver in hot water with his coach.

It's worth noting that Welker told Silver he regrets those comments, of course.

"You know what? I think I've lived and learned," Welker said. "And I hopefully would never put a coach in a position like that [again]."

It would be humorous, however, if Welker put John Fox in a similar position, if only to see Fox's response. He might be fine with it if Welker puts up Welker-ian numbers in a system other than the Patriots, which is something that Welker says will motivate him as he goes forward with the Broncos.

"Wherever you can pull any sort of motivation that you need to use to go out there and play the way you need to play, I say use it," Welker said. "So whatever it is, then yeah, I'll definitely pull from wherever I can."

This is the most outspoken Welker's been since bolting New England for Denver. Even though he's previously said there's nothing personal about his new destination, it's hard to believe that statement in its entirety.

As Welker loosens up, it's a reasonable bet we'll hear even more interesting comments from the former Patriots wide receiver. Hopefully he's hitting his stride when the Broncos roll into New England in Week 12.
